Chapter 5
God’s Words: 2016
A s I sip on my warm cup of coffee and scan my surroundings on my drive home, I can’t stop thinking about my past and all the mess that I made. The reflection that I see now in the rearview mirror is so different from that young girl that I once was. As I look forward to the long dark road in front me, I think about my husband and my son. I’m filled with gratitude for the life that God has given me. I see God’s mercy in everything that I am and in everything that I have.
I can’t help but feel thankful for having learned to forgive the person that abused me. I’m more than grateful because I no longer feel anger towards my father like I once did. I’m eternally appreciative of breaking out from that intense hunger for love that was eating me alive. I’m also filled with gratitude for having encountered the love of God. His love redeemed, transformed, and continues to change me.
His love is like this fire that consumes and burns off every inch of you that is damaged. His love waters all those parts of you that are meant to blossom. John 7:38 says, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."
All it takes is faith and the courage to believe His promises for a better future and hope. It all starts with one simple decision to believe that His plan is better than what you have mapped out for yourself.
Ever since I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, the chain links of destructive cycles in my life have begun to break one after another. One area at a time. Pain has followed with the snapping of each chain link, as I transitioned from one belief system to another, but the result of these processes have been fruitful gain .
After a long drive on that cold morning, I made it to my apartment complex, and I parked in front of my building. I had worship music playing; I closed my eyes to take it all in and began to pray. I prayed for my family, my marriage, my son, for this generation and the next. In a matter of seconds, God inundated my mind with visions. He showed me a row of kids standing upside down. He showed me broken families, emotionally shattered children, streets filled with the lustful eyes of men and women. More thoughts like these shot at me like arrows to its target.
I knew they were God’s thoughts. God’s aching heart at the sight of the world today. I opened my eyes and remained frozen in place, looking straight at the steering wheel, I heard God’s voice whisper to me:
“Everything that you’ve gone through has not been in vain. I took you out of where you were and have positioned you where you are now. Your life will serve as the platform that I will use to provide hope on to many women.
